In my neighborhood there’s an active free-cycling atmosphere, so I’ve added many of these acquired objects and repurposed them in my kitchen, bathroom, and living room. Plus there’s an artistic touch here and there. Bottom line is comfortable, low budget, and something like country-farm-pretty-useable-not-too-busy.
It’s all about new life for old objects.
This isn’t necessarily anything new, but I love my old chemist beakers around the kitchen, like this one that holds my Mexican hot chocolate mixer and wooden spoons
When I found these shutters I was excited because I knew they’d add texture (and the illusion of another window) to my otherwise barren living room wall
I made a second one into a necklace rack by hinging it to my closet wall and tapping in a few brads
This old window is a unique antique wall hanging
I painted a slightly darker shade in the shapes of my most used pots and tapped in long nails (into the wooden studs) since I have such a small amount of kitchen storage space – they look OK with the pots hanging, or when they are in use
An antique postal cabinet found curbside – cheers to free-cycling, it makes a great surface for my record player
I painted an old door and collaged it with black and white photos of my favorite strong women role models, then affixed dark purple tulle to the center panel to hang earrings on
It’s fun to make your own fridge magnets too, handy to have a label-maker around
An old Canada Dry soda box transformed into a spice rack, we bolted this into the far side of our kitchen, a sealed-off door
A cheap souvenir from Puerto Rico – store your chop sticks or pens in cool international cans with their tops taken off with a can opener
Some plants are happy living in water and don’t need a lot of light – it is a good way to bring green into otherwise dingy corners of the house, I use Moses in a Boat (a greener variety shown here) and bamboo, which you can usually find at your local Asian grocer
I keep all my bulk stuff in these airtight jars on shelves – that way I can see what I have and its less likely to go bad
